• Augustine's De Trinitate

7/22/2006
Book III, Chapters 3-4
John Kohl

Augustine continues his examination of Old Testament theophanies.  His major conclusion is that most likely God revealed Himself through angels in a manner similar to His communicating His message through prophets.  Augustine non-dogmatically bases his conclusion on scriptures (Heb 1:13, 2:1; Is 9:6; Acts 7:2, 29, 51; Gen 22:1, 10, 12, 13, 15) indicating God’s using angels for manifesting Himself.

The key point is that God did not appear in His own proper substance.
